What Is a Homestead?
Homestead literally means a family’s home and adjoining land. Though we don’t hear the word much anymore, the American homestead is a longstanding tradition. The Homestead Act of 1862 ushered in Westward Expansion for pioneers. President Lincoln said the purpose was “…to alleviate the condition of men, to lift artificial burdens from all shoulders, and to give everyone an unfettered start and a fair chance in the race of life.” The Homestead Act allowed any claimant, male or female, to secure 160 acres of free land in the great west. Today, the Homestead National Monument of America stands in Southeast Nebraska to commemorate the act, the pioneers, and the significant historical impact.
